Your blender may be a multi-talented appliance, aiding you in everything from smoothies to margaritas, but even it has limits.
Rather than replacing your blender every year, here are 9 things you should know about blender maintenance and use:
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions! Yeah, those papers that you usually overlook can sometimes save you a lot of headaches in the future.
- DO NOT WASH THE BASE OF THE BLENDER, EVEN IF IT’S SEALED! especially not in a dishwasher. (Unless the blender specifically says it’s okay.) The electric system is located at the base. If you want to clean the base, use a wet towel and wipe.
- Check the blender’s gasket (rubber ring). The rubber ring creates an airtight seal between the container and the blender blades, which prevents the blended food or liquid from leaking. After a few years, the seal wears out.
- Using the blender nonstop? Between each session, wait a bit to allow the engine to cool down. It is very important that you do not turn it on for 10 minutes in a row.
- The most common mistake is inserting too many hard food products. It can raise smoke and even burn if it doesn’t have a defense mechanism. Make sure not to put too many hard products and not to exceed the quantity indicated on the marking in the maximum line. You should have enough room for the products to mix. If you start smelling smoke, stop the blender and let it cool. Even blenders with strong engines can stop working all of a sudden from working too hard or for too long on large quantities of hard products.
- Making crushed ice? Something expected from the most basic blenders is crushing ice. It is important to make sure you put in enough liquid and do not put in too many ice cubes at once.
- Frozen products, vegetables, fruits, and ice have to have at least some liquid; otherwise, it will dull the blender blades and bust the container.
- You may think turning the blender on to work at its weakest speed will make the engine last longer and ease the work on it. But, in actuality, it causes it to work harder and strain the engine. With frozen foods and ice, you should start at a slow speed and then turn it to the highest speed.
- Clean your blender! Blenders can seem daunting to clean, especially because of the blades. But if they aren’t cleaned properly, they can become breeding grounds for mold and bacteria. For instructions on how to clean each part, check out this article.
