With the heat and humidity of summer almost upon us, let’s take a look at a few ways we can keep those ever rising power bills down.
Take a few minutes to practice some preventative maintenance and you might just be able to save a few of those hard earned dollars!
Second only to air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers typically use the most power in your home. Those that were manufactured in the 1990s or earlier, use almost 30% more power than newer, more energy efficient models. So if yours is an older model, it’s especially important to make sure it’s operating efficiently. But these tips are helpful regardless of the age of your refrigerator!
As the temperatures rise, more stress is placed on your refrigerator and freezer to keep it consistently cold. Appliances run much more efficiently with a little extra upkeep. The better you take care of them, the longer they’ll last!
Use this quick checklist to help keep your fridge running at its best and help keep those bills low!
Keep it well stocked! It takes more energy to cool an empty refrigerator!
Clean the condenser coils behind your refrigerator. Unplug it first, and then gently clean the coils to remove dirt, dust, and debris with a broom or vacuum.
Check the temperature settings. Check your refrigerator’s manual and make sure your temperature settings are set to the correct temperature.
Location, Location, Location! Try to keep the refrigerator away from heat sources, like the oven and dishwasher!
Test the refrigerator seals for damage and wear. Slide a piece of paper in the refrigerator and freezer doors, if the paper pulls out easily, you may need a replacement seal.
Make sure your refrigerator is level!
If your refrigerator isn’t level, the doors might not close properly and may not seal as tightly as they should, and this is another opportunity for energy loss. Make sure your fridge is level, by placing a carpenter’s level on top of the refrigerator then, if necessary, adjust the feet on the bottom until it’s level.
Keep the drain hole and drip pan clean!
Most refrigerators rely on a drain hole and drip pan to remove condensation, it’s important that these function properly. Clean out any food particles or mineral deposits from the drain hole, then scrub out the drain pan.
Clean the gaskets with vinegar to prevent mildew!
